The Most Common Air Conditioning Problems (And How to Solve Them)

December 15, 2018

AC ProblemsThroughout the summer months, you rely on your air conditioner to keep your home comfortable. Most of the time, you don’t need to think twice about whether or not it’ll be able to do that. However, there are some problems that your air conditioner can develop, and if they occur during the hottest parts of the year, you need to have them taken care of as soon as possible.

At Mike Bryant Heating & Cooling, our professional HVAC contractors can provide you with high-quality air conditioning services to help ensure that your home is kept cool and comfortable throughout the summer months. We offer maintenance services and repairs, and we can always provide high-quality workmanship.

Some problems you encounter with your air conditioner may be able to be fixed without professional service, but others will require an HVAC expert.

Here are a few common AC problems:

The Unit Won’t Turn On

If your air conditioner doesn’t turn on, the first thing that you should check is your HVAC system’s thermostat.

  • If your thermostat is not set to the “cooling” position, then switching it should solve the issue immediately.
  • If you have an automated thermostat, check to make sure that it’s not set to be off during the time that you’re trying to use your AC.
  • There’s also a chance that your thermostat needs to be re-calibrated, which will require professional assistance.

If there’s nothing wrong with your thermostat, then your air conditioner may not be receiving any electricity. You should most likely contact a problem for any electrical problems.

The AC Is Blowing Warm Air

If your air conditioner blows warm air, you may need to have your filters changed. Your AC is still producing cold air, but dirty or clogged filters prevent it from properly distributing the conditioned air. You should clean or change your filters at least once every three months when your AC is being used regularly.

If the filters have been changed or cleaned, your outdoor unit may not be running. Our contractors will be able to inspect your home’s cooling system and determine exactly what’s wrong with the system.

Your AC Unit Is Frozen

Any number of problems could cause your air conditioning system to freeze. One possible cause is improper air flow, which prevents air conditioners from functioning properly. You should clean or change your filters regularly and ensure that the air conditioner’s coils are free of dirt, debris, and other obstructions in order to make sure that the system has proper air flow. You may be able to clear away some debris on your own, but you should also have a professional clean your ducts regularly.
